After dragging her suitcase up three flights of stairs and down the longest corridor known to man, Tilly dumped her case in the middle of the hotel room and eyed it with disdain. She should have known better than to pack so much that it needed the help of her mother to close it. Grabbing the remote control, she flicked through a few TV channels, finally settling on MTV. She had no intention of watching it; her whole purpose for having it on was for some background noise. To deafen India’s voice that played on loop inside her head.

How could she treat me like this? As if I’m a piece of shit. No, not just like a piece of shit, it was as if Tilly had done something wrong. Something personal. But what? Was it because she had touched a raw nerve talking about Bella? But if India was so ashamed of her involvement with Bella, why bother taking Tilly to meet her?

An underlying resentment was evident between them, or so Tilly thought by the way India’s gaze hardened when she looked at Bella. But what did Tilly know? India blew hot and cold in the space of a minute, so it was hard to tell what she really felt. Anyway, all of that was irrelevant. No matter what her history with Bella was, it didn’t give India the right to behave that way towards her.

Anger overshadowed all other thoughts now when she realised it was India that had the problem. Not her. Why can’t she just be thoughtful and kind? Like Oscar. Now there was someone who knew how to treat a person, she told herself as she took out the bag of coke she had taken from Bella’s without her knowing. Tapping the white powder out on the side table, Tilly knelt down, bent over, and using one finger to depress one nostril she snorted the line in one go, enjoying the instant rush.

Tilly wet her fingertip, wiped up the residue, and rubbed it on her gums.

She didn’t need India to have a good time. She was quite capable of having one on her own. Perhaps, she thought, she should have invited Oscar upstairs but soon dismissed that idea. It was one thing being in a street with a stranger, but quite another being in a hotel room with one. Not that she thought someone as nice as Oscar would harm her, but it was better to be cautious all the same. Like she should have been with India.

Tilly knew India thought she was a pushover. Maybe she was, but only for people she liked, and India was fast becoming one person she wasn’t fond of. Not anymore.

When her phone rang, she took a quick glance at the caller ID. ‘Just the person I need,’ Tilly said out loud as she swiped accept. Becca’s sharp cheekbones and mop of frizzy black hair filled the screen.

‘Hey, stranger, what’s happening?’ Becca’s voice was sing-song and chipper.

‘It is so good to see you, Becks.
